Cell Project sheet

Cell Model Presentation
Students will create a model of a plant cell or an animal cell. Students may use any type of (non-perishable) material to create a model that is at least 5 inches but no greater than 20 inches in diameter. Students will be given a grade for presentation, appearance, and accuracy of the model. The model must be 3 dimensional and include at least 10 organelles.

11/12 Chemistry of Cells


In-Class:

Students took notes on the chemistry of cells including the vocabulary from pp. 25-29 in their text. All students should be familiar with the elemental symbols for Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Phosphorus. I introduced the cell project and showed examples of student projects. All students received a word search on the topic Cell Processes which is due in their folder Tuesday.

Homework:

Complete word search if not done in class. Study organelle structure and function.
Extra Credit assignment is exteded and may be presented tomorrow November 13 for 10 extra points.


Students will have a 10 point quiz over the cell organelles at some point this week.

11/07 Cells - Scopes and Review

In-Class:
All students reviewed cell organelle structure and functions. Students who's work for second quarter is up to date viewed cells under the microscopes. Those with missing assignments worked to catch up on those assignments.
Homework:
Continue to study cell organelles function and structure.

Reminder:
Extra credit due Monday, November 12, 2007 for 10 points. Organelle raps, songs, poems, or riddles must be submitted in writing and performed for the class. Presentations should not exceed 1 minute in length.

Students will receive a 10 point quiz over the organelle functions some time next week. The date will not be announced. The unit test over cells will be assigned in about two weeks.

11/06 cell review and scope lab

In-Class:
Students reviewed cell structures and function by way of worksheets and written assignments. Most students had the opportunity to use the microscopes to view plant and animal cells.
Homework:
Study cell structure and function. Organize folder. Any material from the metric system or safety unit may be removed from the folder. Class expectations and assesments should be kept in the folder for reference.

11/05 Cell Organelles

In-Class:
We reviewed the function of the organelles and students took notes on the level of organization within organisms.
Homework:
Complete p.24 "Section Assessment"

Hours 2,3,4,7 will complete letters a and b. Hours 1 and 6 will complete letters a, b, and c. All work must be completed in the notebook in complete sentences.

In-Class:
Students completed watching and taking notes from THE CELL video which details the job of each of the organelles. We began a worksheet in class "Can You Identify These Cell Structures" which must be completed by Monday.

Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held
Thursday, November 8, 2007
from 12:30pm until 6:45pm
with a break between 3pm and 4pm.

This only allows me to meet with 22 parents for 15 minutes each if everyone arrives as scheduled. Priority is given to students who are in danger of failing or at risk of being retained in seventh grade. I regret that I am not able to meet with all 120 parents especially those of you who take the time to read these messages and help your child succeed.

If you are not scheduled for a conference with me or someone else on the seventh grade team, you may contact me through email at sgrumbine@sd194.org to arrange a time during any other regularly scheduled school day.

Students took the microscope test (13 points) and did very well over all. Students took notes on the cell organelles and their function form the video THE CELL.

10/30 Cell Diagrams




In-Class:

Students discussed the development of the microscope and how it effected the advancement of the cell theory. Students began their diagrams of the Plant Cell (p.20) and the Animal Cell (p.21)

Homework:

10/29 microscope

In-Class:
labeled and detailed the structure and function of each of the parts on a microscope. Began a crossword puzzle to reinforce the function of the microscope structure. Discussed the relationship between the improvement of technology over time and the advance of science.
Homework:
Students should complete the crossword if not done in class. It is due in class Tuesday. Students will read and study pp.8 and 9 and be able to describe the historical changes in microscope design.

10/26 THE CELL introduction

In-Class:
Students used a list of 20 common cell organelle names to come up with a personal list of 20 candy or food names that would help them to remember the new and unusual cell organelle names. This is a form of "brain based" activity that should help students make new connections in their mind.

Organize folders for Monday with 12 colored pencils and all handouts.

10/25 lab-seed classification

In-Class:
Students used what they learned about taxonomic keys/dichotomous charts to create their own dichotomous chart of bird seed.
Homework:
A few students needed to take home their bird seed to complete the assignment at home. All students will study for 10 minutes from their notes and handouts.

10/24 classification

In-Class:
Lecture: Students took notes on the history and purpose of classification.
Homework:
Study notes and rewrite them if they are not legible. You need to be able to read your own writing in order to study.



Some groups discussed the detail that a species is identified as closely related organisms that mate to produce offspring that can also mate and reproduce. Two examples of organisms that are produced by animals that were similar but not in the same species are the mule (donkey and horse mating) and the zorse (zebra and horse mating.)

10/23 classification lab

In-Class:
Discussed classification systems. Students arranged shape cut outs into meaningful groups based on their similar characteristics. Tomorrow we will discuss, in detail, the history of our current classification system for living organisms.
Homework:
The few students who did not complete the classification assignment in class must complete it at home. You may use glue, glue stick, or tape to attach the shapes to the construction paper.\

We discussed the fact that while students may not receive written assignments each night, they are required to study their handouts and notes each evening for at least ten minutes. Low test scores most often result from a lack of study time at home.

10/22 Opera Field Trip


In-Class:
Students attended the Lyric Opera production of Cinderella. Hours 1 and 7 attended class as usual.
Hour 1 - Reviewed the solar system and played a whiteboard activity to reinforce their memories.
Hour 7 - Reviewed the steps in the scientific method.


Homework:
Organize notes and ensure planner is up to date.

10/19 Wheel of Wisdom

8am-9am Seventh Grade Students participated in the "Wheel of Wisdom" game show assembly.
9am-10am 6th hour classes
10am-11am 7th hour classes
Students in my 6th hour and 7th hour science classes attended class for one hour each. We watched "Volcanoes" and played whiteboard activities to review the video and reinforce the metric system and the scientific method.

10/17 Lab: effervescent tablets

In-Class:
Laboratory: Observations on an effervescent tablet. Students dissolved Alka Selzer in 400ml of water to observe and write about the reaction. We then listed variables that could effect the outcome and suggested an hypothesis for each. Students noted that we would need a control in order to determine if it was the variable that effected the outcome.

Students reviewed information from their vocabulary/study guide for the Scientific Method TEST tomorrow.

10/16 lab: burning candle

In-Class:
Observations on a burning candle. Students wrote out quantitative and qualitative observations of a burning candle. We discussed conservation of mass as it relates to a burning candle and students came up with some additional examples.

10/15 scientific method


In-Class:

Students reviewed the scientific method. It is important in writing out responses that students include the unit of measure (i.e. ml, g, km, C, etc.) Students received a study guide that doubles as a vocabulary list for the scientific method. We will be using the scientifc method Tuesday and Wednesday as we practice making observations and manipulating variables during our laboratories.

10/12 measurement skills

In-Class:
Students reviewed skills in the scientific method.
Pages 31,32,33 are due in the bin Monday at the beginning of class. Students are expected to make an honest attempt at p.40.

The two Inferring and Measuring answers will be written in the student's notebook with today's date.

Hour 7 does not need to complete p.40 and did not receive the Inferring and Measuring assignment.

Hour 4 may submit whatever work was completed in class. They will not receive a score due to the unplanned interruption of the school's schedule today.

10/11 metrics

In-Class:
Students did activities or review related to the metric system. Assignments were based on the individual needs of each group or individual. All students reviewed the conversions between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Hour 1, Hour 4, and Hour 6 - Students participated in a displaced volume lab OR completed a guided review of the metric system conversions.

Hour 2 - completed a review of the metric system and wrote out the information on converting within the metric system from p. 177.

Hour 3 and Hour 7 - completed a review of the metric system including a math review on solving problems to find the volume of regular and irregularly shaped objects.

Homework:
All Students: Study the steps in the scientific method.
Students who received a metric conversion w/s must complete the work and turn it in to the bin Friday in class.

10/10 metric temperature

In-Class:
We reviewed the scientific method packets in class and students received credit for the work completed.

Students received a conversion worksheet that gives the equation for converting back and forth between degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit. We also discussed standard temperature readings for boiling point of water, freezing point of water, room temperature, and body temperature in both Fahrenheit and Celsius. Students should know how to convert between Celsius and Fahrenheit but what is more important is that they can identify whether the number given is reasonable.
Homework:
Hours 1,2,4 and 6 complete the six conversion problems from the worksheet. We completed at least two examples in class. All classes should memorize the standard temperatures.

10/9 scientific method

In-Class:
Scientific method packets were begun or completed by students. The packets include laboratory skills checkup 2,3,4 and 5.
Homework:
Complete scientific method packet.
Due Wednesday at beginning of class. Completion credit will be assigned.

Students wishing to retake the metric system test must have a test copy signed by a parent/guardian by Thursday. Hours 4, 6 and 7 will receive their test copies tomorrow and they may be signed and returned by Friday.

The metric system is used throughout upcoming assignments. Students requiring additional instruction will be given some time in class to review rather than completing a laboratory but should continue to practice metric conversions at home.

10/5 Scientific Method

In-Class:
Video notes - "The Scientific Method" Students need to be able to identify the steps in the scientific method. Notes from video must include the difference between a control and a variable. Most students completed the practice sheet in class.
Homework:
If a student did not turn in the worksheet Skills Test B: measuring and calculating it must be completed over the weekend and turned in to the bin Tuesday before class.

10/3 metric review/pipette lab

In-Class:
We reviewed measurements within the metric system and converting within the metric system. Some sections also had the opportunity to practice using the serological pipettes in the lab.

Rulers are required for the test.

Hint: you must know the parts of the triple beam balance including the pan and the riders.

10/2 volume lab




In-Class:
Laboratory - students practiced measuring metric volume using graduated cylinders. Students need to understand how the meniscus is created and how to read the volume of fluid in a graduated cylinder. We also reviewed orally for the metric system test.

10/01 scientific method/metrics

In-Class:
Introduced the steps and purpose of the scientific method. Reviewed metric conversions. We will continue practicing conversions throughout the year.
Homework:
Practice converting units within the metric system. Students will use their in class assignments to review converting units. They can fold today's assignment in half so that the answers are hidden, write out the conversion in their notebook then unfold the assignment to check the answer.

9/28 metric measurement


In-Class:
First hour students completed the Otis-Lennon test. Hours 2,3,4,6,7 watched the 22 minute video clip Scientific Method and Measurement which covered the history of the metric system and reviewed conversions within the system. Students in fourth hour created "rulers" using their own feet to measure common objects.
Homework:

In-Class:

9/26 Stanford Testing

In-Class:
Stanford testing during periods 1,2 and 6,7. Period 3 worked on gaining some skills in the area of cooperation. Period 4 completed their points on a meter stick.

Students had a tutorial available to them this morning for the metric system. I invited several students in writing. All are welcome with a pass.

9/25 Stanford Testing


In-Class:
Students tested during periods 1,2 and during periods 6,7. All other classes were attended as usual. Students who did not test during periods 3 and 4 began an activity "points on a meter stick" to reinforce the units of measure decimeter, centimeter, and millimeter.
Homework:
Optional - Review metric units of measure either from the "Student Skills Handbook" at the back of the text or from a conversion website.

9/24 metric practice

In-Class:
We reviewed the ladder method of conversion within the metric system. Students used flip cards to identify common sense units of measure. For example...students will be able to identify whether it is more reasonable to use a meter or kilometer to measure a given space or distance...a milliliter or liter to identify the volume of a given object and so on.
Homework:
Optional - make mental estimates about the size of common objects in your home. Use a metric ruler to check your estimates.

All Homework during Stanford testing is optional; it will not be graded. It is a chance to practice skills that will be used throughout the year.

9/12 Triple Beam Balances

In-Class:
Students took notes on the use of the triple beam balance to mass objects. They practiced reading the beams to arrive at accurate masses for common objects and recorded this information in their notebooks.

Students identified and listed the use of several pieces of laboratory equipment.

Dr. Robert Grumbine, a visiting scientist from NOAA (he's also my brother), spoke with students and answered their questions. 8/30 safety and expectations

In-Class:
Students worked together to review the Code of Conduct. They received a copy of the scheduled topics for the year as well as a list of important dates to remember. WELCOME!

Students did an impressive job today by taking responsibility for getting to each classroom.


In-Class:
Students received informational handouts and discussed classroom expectations regarding behavior and grading policies. Students filled in parent contact sheets. Hours 2,3,4,6 and 7 received Flinn Scientific Safety contracts to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to school. Hour 1 will receive the contracts Thursday.

6/11 School's Out For Summer

Thank you all for a wonderful year of science!



I read the curriculum to several students the last week and they were as impressed with themselves as I was at all they had learned throughout the year. I look forward to some free time over the summer to work on some of my own science projects and recuperate.



Summer is an excellent time to work on those (subliminal science)

car maintenance projects (combustion, chemistry, metrics, force and motion)

improve your cooking skills (chemistry, measurement)

participate in sports (anatomy and physiology, force and motion)

or just relax and stare up at the sky - (astronomy, weather)

Students in hours 1, 7 and 9 completed a diagram of basic plant structureand function. Hours 2, 5 and 8 completed science poems in the style of Jon Scieszka. The poems and their accompanying illustrations are hilarious!

In-Class:
Students organized notes from graphic organizers into their notebooks. All work for the last week will refer to the notes taken in class. Texts were collected. Some students still have outstanding fees from the previous text series. The main office has a list of all fees due; most range from 1 to 5 dollars for binding damage.

In-Class:
Students watched a video explanation of photosynthesis. Activity - students used capillary tubes and blue stained water to model the action of plants drawing water and minerals into themselves.
Homework:
Look through the grassy areas to and from school and identify vascular and nonvascular plants. Note which are more abundant and be able to explain why.

Students worked on an assignment in class reviewing pp. 104-111, introduction to plants.
Fungi/kingdom practical exam: Students completed a 5 point lab practical to identify the kingdom (or domain) to which each of the five specimen belong.

Complete p.111 section review 1ab, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab if not done in class.

5/24 yeast lab

In-Class:
Students completed the Laboratory "What's for Lunch." They filled in data tables that they will bring home to complete the Analysis and Conclusion portion of the lab. The lab is easy to recreate at home and supplies can be purchased for less than $5.00 from the grocery store if you want to see what happens beyond the 40 minute time frame!
Homework:
Complete the Laboratory write up.

The Plant Hunters Essays turned in Friday will be given late credit.

Students participated in a class discussion and informational session about organ transplantation. The site we accessed in class www.organdonor.gov provides an interactive tutorial about organ donation and transplant. We also introduced the immune system.

Students completed their frog dissection packets. Many students used their time wisely and were able to complete the extra credit microsopic examination of the frog's skin.

We bid a fond farewell to our froggy friends today. Several students actually thanked me for the opportunity to dissect or mentioned what a good time they had in class this week. The students displayed outstanding lab practices and it was a real pleasure for me to watch all the young scientists at work. Kudos to you all!

Students were introduced to their frogs and began external examination. We reviewed safety procedures, clean up procedures, and expectations for lab behavior.

In-Class:
Student reviewed the effects of drugs on the Central Nervous System. Activity - students tried inserting a pipecleaner into a straw (first with both eyes open then with one eye shut) in order to experience the coordination of two eyes necessary to present one image.

4/17 CNS and PNS


In-Class:
Students modeled the passing of a stimulus (tennis ball) from the sensory neuron, across a synapse, to an interneuron, across a synapse, and finally to a motor neuron. Students took notes on the Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous systems.
Homework:
Complete ws front and back of Reading and Review; fill in the blanks only. It is not necessary to complete the portion that asks to be done on a separate sheet of paper.

Report cards and grade reports went home with students. 5 extra credit points will be awarded if the report is signed and returned by tomorrow.

4/5 Lab and video clips

In-Class:
Students participated in a lab that tested reaction times (responses) given a stimulus. Students in the morning were able to sample some videos from www.youtube.com including Alkali metals reacting in water and student-created video of atoms. In the afternoon, youtube wasn't streaming well so we previewed a video on the nervous system.
