5/31 plants

In-Class:
Students watched a video explanation of photosynthesis. Activity - students used capillary tubes and blue stained water to model the action of plants drawing water and minerals into themselves.
Homework:
Look through the grassy areas to and from school and identify vascular and nonvascular plants. Note which are more abundant and be able to explain why.

In-Class:
All classes reviewed p.111 assignment.
Hours 1,2,8 and 9 completed the drawing and labeling of the Life Cycle of a Plant.
Hours 7 and part of hour 5 went on a nature hike to do field research of vascular and nonvascular plants.
Homework:
Hours 1,2,8,9 Complete diagram of the Life Cycle of a Plant.

5/29 plants

In-Class:
Students worked on an assignment in class reviewing pp. 104-111, introduction to plants.
Fungi/kingdom practical exam: Students completed a 5 point lab practical to identify the kingdom (or domain) to which each of the five specimen belong.
Homework:
Complete p.111 section review 1ab, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab if not done in class.


Thursday, May 31: Hours 8 and 9 must submit texts in class.
Friday, June 1: Texts must be submitted in class.
Friday, June 1: Sports recognition assembly, hours 8 and 9.

Reminder: The last day of school attendance is Monday, June 11. There is much to learn before that date and YES we will continue making the most of every school attendance day in science by completing real assignments and laboratories.

In-Class:
Students reviewed yeast lab and reviewed fungi worksheet. We introduced plants by way of a video clip.
Homework:
Students who failed to submit an essay Thursday or late on Friday are required to complete a written assignment over the weekend.

5/24 yeast lab

In-Class:
Students completed the Laboratory "What's for Lunch." They filled in data tables that they will bring home to complete the Analysis and Conclusion portion of the lab. The lab is easy to recreate at home and supplies can be purchased for less than $5.00 from the grocery store if you want to see what happens beyond the 40 minute time frame!
Homework:
Complete the Laboratory write up.

The Plant Hunters Essays turned in Friday will be given late credit.

5/22 TEST

In-Class:
Students were tested over bacteria/viruses and protists. 25 points. Students began reading fungi material from text pp. 88-95.

Some classes had the opportunity to go on a cicada hunt on school grounds. Not many were found today but I expect a great cicada turn out by next week.

Homework:
Complete reading from text pp. 88-95.

5/18 "The Plant Hunters"

In-Class:
Students completed part II of The Plant Hunters. They will write a five paragraph, persuasive essay that details the importance of maintaining and researching plants in their natural environments. Students must use their video notes to complete the essay.

Final School Days

Before students begin singing School's Out For Summer or some similarly memorable tune that celebrates the beginning of summer, it's important to remember that we are still in school and there is much to be learned.

In-Class:
Students took notes from graphic organizers. As the end of the year draws near, students will be relying exclusively on these notes. Textbooks will be collected the week of May 28.

Look for signs of cicadas. Signs include
small lumps of dirt pushed up from the ground

In-Class:
Students viewed the 20 minute video "The Truth about H2O" and completed a paragraph about preventing or treating water contamination.
Homework:
Complete paragraph if not done in class. Read pp.15-24 in text if available.


Grade Reports go home this Friday, May 11. Signed science reports will earn 5 extra credit points if returned by Monday, May 14.

In-Class:
We played an interactive computer game that requires students to activate T cells, B cells and phagocytes to stop the spread of a virus. Students added notes in their notebooks about the immune system.

Complete ws "The Body's defenses" Study pp. 138-158 in text.
