Thank You

Thank you to all those students and parents who have shown genuine concern for science education and have made use of this blog. Unfortunately, due to lack of interest, I find it necessary to discontinue posting. I will begin posting again, with enthusiasm, when someone other than my friends and family indicate an interest.

Thank you
Ms. Susan Grumbine

Fermi Lab

I had the most incredible experience at Fermi Lab, the national accelerator located in Batavia, Illinois about an hour north west of Steger. I strongly encourage parents and students to visit the website as well as the research grounds that are part of Fermi Lab. You don't have to be a scientist, a teacher, or even someone who likes science to enjoy the site. You can watch the buffalo roam; go fishing; bike through the grounds and around the accelerator; view the sculptures; enjoy nature; become a human sundial....all without even entering a science building!!

Holiday Messages

Friday, December 19. I was at least as shocked as my students that we had school today. Parents and students alike deserve enormous credit for making it to school despite sleet, freezing rain, and bitter cold. My entire homeroom was in attendance today. I think we are the only homeroom who can make that claim. Way to go!

My first hour students had the choice of writing messages for posting to this site for your viewing pleasure:

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

You all rock my socks!
See ya later!

Love,

-Shelby

Merry Christmas

Organelle songs, raps, poems

Students received ten extra credit points for writing and presenting their organelle songs, raps, or poems.

Cell membrane and the cell wall

yeah, we know it all.

The ribosomes,

they're the mighty zones.

The chloroplasts

they just seem to last.

The nucleus is not the spookiest

but it's the coolest.

You can always tell

if it's the cell.

Yeah.

That's the cell

and we learn it in school

because that's cool.

Thank You Parents

Wow! I have received some of the most polite and friendly emails from parents who checked out this site. It feels great knowing that the site has been helpful to you and your students.

Thank you so much.

8/26 Homeroom

Welcome back to school. Students met with their homeroom teachers today for one hour where we reviewed the student handbook, school expectations, and team expectations. Homeroom will be a daily event this year and takes place during the first 15 minutes of the school day. Students remain in their homeroom for their first hour class and will return to homeroom for the last several minutes of the day after 9th hour.

Parents: Please complete the "homework" packet sent home by Columbia Central and students will return the completed forms to their homeroom teacher.

Students are expected to have their classroom supplies turned in by Friday, August 29. For a list of required supplies, visit www.sd194.org

Organelle poems, riddles, raps

Students showed off their creativity for extra credit by way of writing and presenting original works about an organelle.

I produce energy like the Duracell bunny.
I am in both cells.
I am an organelle.
Even though I am smaill, I have a lot of responsibilities.
Without me, the cell wouldn't be.
What am I?
The mitochondria

Anthony M.

I'm a chloroplast.
I grow fast.
I get solar power
to power a flower.
I'm green
but I'm not mean.

Brandon M.

I am the brain of the cell,
if that rings a bell.
I direct activities like a control center.
Thnk you can do better?
What am I?
The nucleus

Alessia M.

I break down large food
even when I am not in the mood.
I degest old cells.
Does that ring any bells?
What am I?
A lysosome

Riley E.

Cellulose, it's not cellulite.
It helps the cell wall
hold your organelles tight.
A material so strong
it must belong
in the cell.
Keeps it standing strong.
Freaky, freaky, fresh.
WORD.

Jimie O.

I hold everthing in
kinda like a bin.
Getting trhough me is hard,
I might leave you scarred.
I am sorta circular like a ball.
Guess what?
I'm the cell wall.

Autumn S.

Cell Model Presentation
Students will create a model of a plant cell or an animal cell. Students may use any type of (non-perishable) material to create a model that is at least 5 inches but no greater than 20 inches in diameter. Students will be given a grade for presentation, appearance, and accuracy of the model. The model must be 3 dimensional and include at least 10 organelles.

Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held
Thursday, November 8, 2007
from 12:30pm until 6:45pm
with a break between 3pm and 4pm.

This only allows me to meet with 22 parents for 15 minutes each if everyone arrives as scheduled. Priority is given to students who are in danger of failing or at risk of being retained in seventh grade. I regret that I am not able to meet with all 120 parents especially those of you who take the time to read these messages and help your child succeed.

If you are not scheduled for a conference with me or someone else on the seventh grade team, you may contact me through email at sgrumbine@sd194.org to arrange a time during any other regularly scheduled school day.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone when the full schedule of science classes resumes full time on Wednesday, August 29

6/11 School's Out For Summer

Thank you all for a wonderful year of science!

I read the curriculum to several students the last week and they were as impressed with themselves as I was at all they had learned throughout the year. I look forward to some free time over the summer to work on some of my own science projects and recuperate.

Summer is an excellent time to work on those (subliminal science)

car maintenance projects (combustion, chemistry, metrics, force and motion)

improve your cooking skills (chemistry, measurement)

participate in sports (anatomy and physiology, force and motion)

or just relax and stare up at the sky - (astronomy, weather)

Take Care,

Ms. Grumbine

2/8 Conferences

Thank you to all the parents who came out in the cold to support their children's education at conferences this afternoon and evening. Parents are their children's first and most important teacher in life. Thank you for allowing me to borrow your child for 40 minutes each school day to share my joy of science with them!
